I stumbled upon these two young buskers in an alley off Grafton Street in Dublin, counting their days’ wages. I was struck by their curated choice in clothing, traditional in style, yet polished and on trend with ‘Peaky Blinders’. They had obviously put thought into how they wanted to present themselves to their audience of locals and tourists alike. I stayed in touch with these young lads via social media as I painted the portrait, and learned that their dad had had a stroke. They were busking to make money and carry on the musical traditions of their family. Their father had once been the accordion player for acclaimed musician Glen Hansard’s 90s band The Frames, and Glen will occasionally join these boys for a busking session. He serves as a godfather in their lives, as their father never fully recovered from the stroke. I plan to paint them again, perhaps getting Glen in the scene.
