I am exploring the possibilities of layering watercolour in a playful way while pushing the design and values to their extremes. The series follows on from my work last year with an increase in size and playing with motifs taken from the local landscape. "Out of the darkness and into the light" was completed following on from a series titled “Gems within the Chaos”. This refers to the chaotic local landscape with it’s erosion, sailing club, industry and docks all in close proximity, and the chaos of my mind while struggling with depression this year. Within this chaos I am always looking for the beauty. As with chaos comes calm and with darkness comes light. The motifs include: Circles which for me represent water, calm and protection; loops like the ropes of sailing vessels ( sailing has always brought me calm and now I watch from the shore all the varied boats and ships of the isle of sheppey coastline); and the line on the right represent the dead remains of small trees and bushes which have descended the cliffs onto the shore to form their own graveyard. They remind me of my personal loss of my father. Painting as we all know heals and therefore as the painting process went on I found areas of beauty which I then amplified with accents of gold.
