Hot Flush

Hot flush, my painting is about myself and how I am dealing with various menopause symptoms. One of it is the hot flush, I have had this sudden heat, mostly on my face, for last ten years or so. Usually I ignore it as its passes quick enough and no time to do much about it. But as my other Job is life drawing model and often used as portraiture model and as I feel sudden heat climbing up my face, I can see artists have to stop or observing my ever changing tone For this self portrait, I have worked from live, with mirror and when hot flush hit, I took photos of myself and worked from photograph too. I didn’t realized how red/orange I turn. Hot flush is not pleasant experience but I can’t be bothered by it as it happens so often and had been for so long, and I joke about it. If I could ride above my embarrassment, if I could whistle it away I would, even only in paintings.

It's abstracted familiarity. I wanted to capture a hope, a wish, that's all. I express with many, many spontaneous marks and layers of inks, pencils, and paint, without any expectation of outcome. This way I can't get a wrong result. My thoughts were about the future and who would be part of it, a need for meaningful connections and simple things. Often it's vessels that appear first, here the glasses were obvious to me with the flashes of blue, from there came a narrative of friendship and sharing, of happiness and of hope. But my story is unimportant, I want to evoke untold or as-yet-unknown narratives and emotions of connection and familiarity.

Blackbirds & Thrushes

Exploring dualities, this painting pays homage to the traditional tune Hares on the Mountain, a love ballad shifting the traditional power dynamic in courtship. Standing in between two branches, hair braided from two strands of hair, the central maiden is surrounded by two songbirds. Embodying the men, their presence challenges the commonly held analogy between women and non-threatening animals such as birds (a saying still used to refer to girls in a foolish manner) in folk music. The strawberry, held in defiance, historically embodies both righteousness and sin. The choice of referencing an archival Strawberry Thief Liberty dress, whose pattern was designed after the cheeky thrushes W. Morris used to spot in his garden, subtly expands on this ambiguity. Seen as the fruit of love in ancient Rome, a devotional symbol of the Virgin in Medieval manuscripts, and even temptation’s ally in Bosch’s Garden of Delights, its double meaning never ceases to question intent. This painting, with its rich tones and luminous glazes, is an exercise in balance, standing in tune with our time in its subversive playfulness.

The painting is a metaphor for the sacrifice behind the achievement of success, of every success. We can see the wounds on a dancer's feet, hidden by her pretty ballet shoes. The dancer seems to float with grace and lightness during the performance, without apparent effort, but in reality she dedicates herself to a strenuous daily practice to achieve her goal.

Girls' Day Out combines two printmaking techniques - silkscreen and lino printing. The drawing fluid technique was employed to create the individual screens used to lay down the base colours for each print in the edition. Printing a carved lino block over the base colours using warm black, oil-based printing ink, completed the composition. The inspiration was provided by the obvious joy of a trio of hens as they explored the garden, free of the henhouse.

It one of a few self portraits I have painted from life. Having suffered from eating disorders for many years, I find painting myself to be a healing process where I'm not judging myself but trying to state some facts about my physical appearence. I noticed that in presence of a mirror, I tend to objectify myself - whether it's a mirror in an elevator, or a car or shop window. I realised that when I paint myself though, I free myself from judgement, see things as they are and look at myself with acceptance. I made these self portraits a tradition now and it's a space where I go when I'm not feeling very well or need to understand myself.

‘Gold Stripe’ is a portrait of performance artist Silvia Ziranec. It forms part of a series called 'Portraits of Personal Style', in which a diverse range of women and girls with nonconformist approaches to personal expression are depicted in ways that defy patriarchal conventions of female representation. Throughout the history of art, where images of women were traditionally created to satisfy the dominant patriarchal culture and the male gaze, older women are frequently depicted as frail and vulnerable, or as obsolete, sexually bankrupt anachronisms, particularly when contrasted with images of young women, typically depicted as sexual objects. Silvia’s energetic presence and playful approach to fashion and style inspired me to paint her portrait to present an alternative, more positive view of the older woman. In the execution of this portrait, I sought to capture Silvia’s lively personality, bemused expression, and idiosyncratic personal style. On the day I met her, along with her bright magenta hair, cluster pearl earrings, beaded bauble necklace and electric blue eyeliner, Silvia wore a gold stripe painted on her nose. The resulting portrait was painted in watercolour, with the gold stripe on Silvia’s nose applied using imitation gold leaf.

This watercolour portrait was painted from a screengrab, taken by the artist, during such a Zoom meeting with businesswoman and friend, Jan Bigg-Wither. In "Environmental Crisis" (2019) Natalia Kapchuk represented her reflection on the plastic pollution and oil spill issues. The combinations of plastic waste and oil in our oceans are destroying the creatures that live in these waters. The devastating impact plastic and oil have on ecosystems can be traced through several different interrelated facts. The presence of plastic and toxins can be found within animals throughout the world’s food chain. With only fourteen percent of plastic packaging sent for recycling, an estimated forty percent of all global packaging material is placed in landfills, which is then leaked into the environment. Oil waste furthers environmental problems with the greatest damage caused, not by accidental spills and leaks, but by chronic and careless habits of improper disposal of used motor oil.

A bird’s eye view of a folded patchwork landscape filled with an intense saturation of colour and patterns. I populated the painting with a mix of Persian tiles, Indian bedspread, Chinese cushions, and a Nordic jumper which fill the canvas with patterns and deep gorgeous colours. It feels like these will come alive and re-emerge in the sleeper’s dreams. I also enjoyed the extra narrative of the doll on the bed, of ‘The Woman Who Swallowed a Fly,’ which with its patterned dress added a fairy tale feel to this piece.

A painting of Vanessa, a personal trainer at my local gym and her wife. I wanted to celebrate the miracle of birth, made more so as two women come together to create and nourish new life. Vanessa is holding her wife’s baby, a scene which achieves unusual balance because next time her wife will carry her baby. The composition is one of strength with them forming a triangle balanced by a somewhat abstract geometric background. Painted in a limited zorn palette.

‘She will never love you’ is a painting about coming to what now appears to be a painfully obvious conclusion after the loss of someone important to me. This is a painting about working through this realisation and coming to a place of acceptance. This portrait is part of a new body of work where I give shape to my reflections on the impermanence of memory. Memories are made of subtle layers that vanish ever so imperceptibly mirroring the many subtle shifts and changes in peoples’ personalities. The memories, as the often are for me, are the light that help us go through the most difficult moments of our lives.
