This painting arose out of my personal aversion to the phrase ‘strong and independent woman’, which only seems to conjour up a woman who’s privileged, young and sexy I wanted to honour women who I regard as more deserving of the phrase. Women like my widowed aunt, who had no choice but to be strong when bereavement thrust her into independence. Our town and villages are full of widows, quiet, unassuming and brave…..and overlooked.
