Several years ago my beloved dog died. I was broken - couldn't paint, couldn't speak without breaking into tears and fell into a depression for many months. I eventually saw a CBT counsellor who told me to visualise a parrot who whispered repetitive negative thoughts into my head and not to listen to its incessant squawking. This painting is the first result of that imagery that eventually led me out of the darkness. Therapy also unearthed suppressed emotions about my AIDS diagnosis more than 20 years ago. The jack in the box is symbolic of the explosion of suppressed emotions: rage, fear, anxiety, questioning self worth, shame (although in the intervening years I became an early activist for women living with HIV). This painting was pivotal in resuming both my art and activism in being the voice of the many women who are unable to speak out.
