As a portrait artist, I am captivated by people and their presence. Painting a person is more than rendering their physical features, it is about capturing that intangible essence that defines them. Bold and unique, I was inspired by Alek beyond her beauty. She is a proud Sudanese woman who exudes authenticity and confidence. This painting is meant to capture her strength and radiance, to portray a feeling of empowerment and strong sense of self. For me, Alek represents the quintessential qualities of women necessary to break down barriers and contribute to a more equitable and progressive world. Her portrait is meant to inspire women to be their unapologetic authentic selves. It is also a tribute to my mother who raised me on her own, worked full-time, and recently survived breast cancer. The strength and resilience of these women inspire me to embrace my own power and use my creative voice to illuminate the path for others to do the same.
