In this portrayal, I endeavored to encapsulate the serene beauty unfolding within the depicted scene. From her gaze emanates an innocence that transcends the confines of the canvas, imbuing the atmosphere with a tranquil essence. Bathed in the gentle glow of sunlight cascading from above, her visage exudes a delicate purity, aglow with golden hues. The intertwining of floral patterns adorning her dress harmonizes seamlessly with the intricate details of the sofa, forging an undivided unity. This composition not only captures the purity and tranquility of the moment but also evokes a poetic resonance . It's as if the very essence of "Gulbarin," a feminine name in Kurdish meaning "blossom," infuses the scene, subtly enriching its beauty.

In this artwork, two separate frames serve to emphasize both the individual and their integration within their surroundings. The first frame isolates the subject, drawing attention to their contemplative state and self-awareness. Meanwhile, the second frame expands to encompass the broader environment, where the subject's reflection and shadow merge seamlessly with their surroundings. This integration symbolizes the indivisible connection between the individual and the world around them. The serene ambiance, amplified by the tranquil sky and its reflection on the glass, evokes a sense of renewal and anticipation, capturing the essence of a new day dawning with the gentle caress of the morning breeze.

‘Albion night' draw inspiration from moments of "dead time" such as traffic jams or commuting. I’m using the journey as a metaphor, with vehicles pushing through urban streets. The work reflects that sense of isolation and solitude that often accompanies these journeys, while also conveying the underlying stress and complexity of our relationship with time and acceleration society. As individuals we often feel rushed and pressed for time. Embedded within this work is a poignant reflection on the universal struggle against time poverty. We find ourselves perpetually caught in the throes of haste, juggling the demands of work, family, and leisure. This personal narrative intersects with broader societal challenges, particularly resonating with the experiences of working parents who grapple with the delicate balance of time allocation.

I am exploring the possibilities of layering watercolour in a playful way while pushing the design and values to their extremes. The series follows on from my work last year with an increase in size and playing with motifs taken from the local landscape. "Out of the darkness and into the light" was completed following on from a series titled “Gems within the Chaos”. This refers to the chaotic local landscape with it’s erosion, sailing club, industry and docks all in close proximity, and the chaos of my mind while struggling with depression this year. Within this chaos I am always looking for the beauty. As with chaos comes calm and with darkness comes light. The motifs include: Circles which for me represent water, calm and protection; loops like the ropes of sailing vessels ( sailing has always brought me calm and now I watch from the shore all the varied boats and ships of the isle of sheppey coastline); and the line on the right represent the dead remains of small trees and bushes which have descended the cliffs onto the shore to form their own graveyard. They remind me of my personal loss of my father. Painting as we all know heals and therefore as the painting process went on I found areas of beauty which I then amplified with accents of gold.

This painting captures the essence of the profound connection between my son and me. Through carefully chosen warm colors, I sought to express the deep affection and warmth that binds us together. The deliberate use of soft edges enhances the portrayal, emphasizing the organic and interconnected nature of our relationship. Notably, the subtle suggestion of a window in the background introduces an element of mystery, hinting at the uncharted territories that lie ahead in our shared journey—a symbolic representation of the unknown future that awaits us.

I stumbled upon these two young buskers in an alley off Grafton Street in Dublin, counting their days’ wages. I was struck by their curated choice in clothing, traditional in style, yet polished and on trend with ‘Peaky Blinders’. They had obviously put thought into how they wanted to present themselves to their audience of locals and tourists alike. I stayed in touch with these young lads via social media as I painted the portrait, and learned that their dad had had a stroke. They were busking to make money and carry on the musical traditions of their family. Their father had once been the accordion player for acclaimed musician Glen Hansard’s 90s band The Frames, and Glen will occasionally join these boys for a busking session. He serves as a godfather in their lives, as their father never fully recovered from the stroke. I plan to paint them again, perhaps getting Glen in the scene.

The artist’s wife, the artist’s daughter, the artist. This portrait is primarily a study of my daughter who’s an art student with a backdrop of a painting of Madame Machard, the wife of the 19th century French painter, Jules Marchard. My daughter and I visited our local art museum, the Arras Musée de Beaux Arts, and we discovered this painting. We were impressed by the delicate, but assured gaze of the model. We imagined her story as an artist’s wife and how very different her life must have been compared to mine as a female painter and my daughter as an art student. I tried to capture my daughter in an assured pose, displaying her tall stature and independence in contrast alongside the artist’s wife in her role of being decorative, reliant and adoring to her husband, the artist. The portrait started with pencil studies of my daughter from life, who I have painted many times before, and continued onto canvas with a detailed drawing, a simple grisaille and a limited colour palette. My aim was to be sympathetic to both models, with my daughter holding the ace of hearts playing card symbolizing how her life, her future, is her own compared to Madame Machard who seems almost fragile behind her, who we imagine her future is very much in the hands of her artist husband, the painter. This painting of Madame Marchard, painted in 1897, is currently on loan from the Musée d’Orsay, Paris. My painting of Madame Marchard is a mere interpretation in contrast to my daughter’s portrait who I’ve captured her likeness as close as I possibly can.

These paintings are from a series documenting the effects perimenopause had on both my mind and body and how I struggled to make sense of all the, often conflicting, emotions. Using self-portraits I have tried to accurately capture my feelings over a period of seven years before starting HRT. I try and describe in paint subjects such as the mood swings that would result in periods of melancholy or sheer anger. Anxiety so bad that I wondered if I was able to get out of bed and face another day. All these feelings and more I have tried to show in visual form in the hope that other women could identify with and make sense of their own feelings.

This painting is from of a series of works called 'under cover'. The initial source material for this particular work was a young French girl called Elsa, who seemed to embody the contradictory qualities of timidness alongside the universal qualities of strength and determination. Following some digital manipulation of the image to determine the composition, colour etc. it was then scaled up and executed in transparent colour oil glazes, a technique I have been developing for the last 5-6 years. My main area of interest has always been the human face and form, encompassing universal recognition of emotion and sensuality seen up close with highly detailed observation. Larger than life images dealing with fragments of life seen at close range - the portrayal of the elusive touch or feeling; the detail and minutiae of life; introspection - fleeting ‘moments’ translated into paintings.

Symbolic value of rose and book, fluidity and narrative potential of textiles, metaphoric use of gold, subvert the idea of preciousness. Most invaluable treasures are all around us, in the enduring beauty of nature, perpetuity of culture, the work of human hands and within us. Informed by life experiences and private histories, ‘Rose Perpetual’ desires to distil artist’s voice into universally relatable narrative placed within a wider context of human journeys through life. Resulting artist book textile sculpture examines power of memory, identity, rhythms of nature echoing our own, connection to ancestral knowledge and, above all, - hope.

Michaela Wheater’s work is concerned with the human condition. It takes the form of printmaking and oversized figurative drawings, all made from a deep personal exploration of vulnerability and the search for a truth in the moment of making. Michaela works intuitively and enjoys the dialogue that comes from working and reworking. She values the richness of a layered surface that is often the result of honestly showing her ‘working out’. Work is less about a popular aesthetic than what the process of making art means.

This piece is part of a series of portrait I have been working on of the artist of my life that have inspired me. My work focusses on contemporary portraiture, a fusion of oil and ground marble. I like to observe, understand, and capture the energy and character of each subject, from their everyday gestures to their overall character. The gaze of each subject becomes a defining moment and a unique aspect of my work.

I fell in love with the contrast between the geometric boardwalk and the natural environment in this composition and for me, it encapsulates the japanese idea of 'ma' space. Ambre Solaire wafting in the air, ice cream melting down my arm in the summer sunshine, eagerly awaiting more time to frolic on the beaches. I am always amazed how an image or a smell can reveal a buried memory, in this painting I have focused on the sensations of cold melting ice cream coupled with the evocative aroma of Ambre Solaire worn by my mother - a warm enveloping scent that pervades to this day.

This painting is free floated in a limed white frame. I chose Kikazaru (hear no evil) as a character in this drama. The countrywoman mustard pot and the owl represent the other natures. I grow most of the flowers in my still life paintings, many dahlias didn’t make it through last winter. The orange dinner-plate in contrast to the blue was how I started this painting.

'He who works with his hands and his head and his heart is an artist', Francis of Assisi. I set this exciting still life up the same day that I finished the previous painting. It lurked, I swooned at the colour and tried to decide what I was going to say. The semi-intentionality of setting up a still life is the launchpad of my painting, it’s part of the hard work. To be honest, for me, the hardest part is waiting to get started and giving things time to percolate and giving way to the life of life.

Several years ago my beloved dog died. I was broken - couldn't paint, couldn't speak without breaking into tears and fell into a depression for many months. I eventually saw a CBT counsellor who told me to visualise a parrot who whispered repetitive negative thoughts into my head and not to listen to its incessant squawking. This painting is the first result of that imagery that eventually led me out of the darkness. Therapy also unearthed suppressed emotions about my AIDS diagnosis more than 20 years ago. The jack in the box is symbolic of the explosion of suppressed emotions: rage, fear, anxiety, questioning self worth, shame (although in the intervening years I became an early activist for women living with HIV). This painting was pivotal in resuming both my art and activism in being the voice of the many women who are unable to speak out.

This painting takes its influence from pre-raphaelite floral symbolism, with the rose being an unwavering symbol of love. The scattered petals represent a failed and withered love. The painting is intentionally decorative and imbued with seemingly superfluous and overused symbolism— to convey that beauty can prevail in the aftermath of a twisted love. The figure gazes away, forlorn but defiant. Hopeful of the reprieve that will come her way.
